Over the years, one of the company's hallmarks is its dedication to the communities where it operates. Jacobs was instrumental in the creation of the Boston Bruins Foundation in 2003, which formalized the Bruins' multitude of community activities and brought his passion for children's charities and sports together to create opportunities for underprivileged youth. He and his wife, Margaret, recently donated a record $10 million gift to the University at Buffalo to establish the Jacobs Institute, a collaborative partnership between UB and Kaleida Health that will support world-class excellence in heart and vascular care, research and teaching. This gift makes the Jacobs family the university’s most generous donor, with gifts totaling more than $18 million. Over the years, the Jacobs family has provided scholarships to female student athletes and undergraduate honors scholars, and enabled UB to fund special needs and opportunities as they arise. In the mid-1980s, Jacobs gave more than $1 million to help fund two academic chairs and support the School of Management's MBA program in China. The school's building bears the Jacobs family name, in honor of his longstanding generosity.
