Space station construction continues…

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. (June 5, 2009) – A limited number of launch viewing tickets are available to view the launch of space shuttle Endeavour from Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. STS-127, targeted for Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 7:39 p.m. ET, will deliver the final components of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Kibo laboratory to the International Space Station (ISS).

Space shuttle Endeavour’s seven person crew will launch and install two components of the Japanese Kibo laboratory: the Japanese Experiment Module Exposed Facility and the Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section. They will provide a type of “front porch” platform outside the Japanese module, allowing experiments to be conducted in the harsh environment of space, and a robotic arm that will be used to position experiments outside the space station. The 16-day mission will include five spacewalks.

A historic moment will occur with the flight of space shuttle Endeavour, as it will be the first time two Canadian astronauts, Robert Thirsk and Julie Payette, will be in space at the same time. Payette will join fellow Canadian and ISS crewmember Thirsk when she arrives at the station.

Guests will view the launch from the Rocket Garden of the Visitor Complex, a viewing area six miles away from the launch pad. As with all shuttle launches, special launch day activities will take place at the Visitor Complex. Guests will enjoy live NASA countdown audio and video presentations on a jumbo-sized screen, astronaut appearances and launch briefings. Before witnessing the live space shuttle launch, park visitors can experience the sights, sounds and sensations of their own shuttle launch on the Shuttle Launch Experience.

Admission tickets must be purchased in advance to receive a special car placard to allow entry to Kennedy Space Center after the gates close. Tickets can be purchased online or by telephone and must be picked up at the Visitor Complex prior to June 13. Visitor Complex admission is $38+ tax for adults and $28+ tax for children ages 3-11 and includes viewing of the space shuttle Endeavour launch from the Visitor Complex.
