NASA Mercury Astronauts Glenn and Carpenter Headline Day “Celebrating 50 Years of Americans in Orbit”

In 1962, NASA’s Project Mercury made history by sending an American into orbit for the first time. To mark the 50^th anniversary of this historic achievement, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is inviting the public to a celebration that will be headlined by Mercury astronauts John Glenn and Scott Carpenter, the first two Americans to orbit Earth.

Franklin R. Chang-Dìaz, Kevin P. Chilton and Charles J. Precourt will join an elite group of American space heroes as they are inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame® during a ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on Saturday, May 5, 2012. They will be welcomed to the ranks of legendary space pioneers like Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, Alan Shepard, Jim Lovell, Sally Ride and John Young – distinguished members of the Hall of Fame.

STYLE AND SUBSTANCE - The stylized shape of the new home for Atlantis incorporates hues of orange and gold to represent both the heat and the bright colors of re-entry. Special gray colored tiling has been incoporated into the building's design to represent the space shuttle tiles that protected the orbiter from the heat of re-entry.

Kennedy Space Center, FL (August 1, 2011) - While space shuttles have had their last lift-off, locals and visitors to the Space Coast can still experience the thrill of a launch. On Friday, Aug. 5, between 11:34 a.m. and 12:43 p.m., NASA is scheduled to launch the Jupiter-bound, solar-powered Juno spacecraft aboard the most powerful Atlas rocket ever made, the Atlas V 551, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The first 2,000 guests to arrive at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex (KSCVC) will be invited to view the launch from the closest possible public viewing area, the Apollo/Saturn V Center.
